Groundhog Day is fast approaching. This is a special holiday for me because this is the day my youngest daughter was born! I will never forget we when I call my friend in the middle of the night to come stay with my two older daughters. Her husband (without missing a beat) said, "Let's hope she doesn't see her shadow and want back in!"

Here are some fun classroom activities for Groundhog Day.

Summary: Groundhog Day is on February 2.

Popular legend tells us that a groundhog awakens from hibernation and emerges to see if winter is over. If he sees his shadow, he will become frightened and scurry back into his home in the ground. This means there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not see his shadow (cloudy day), he won't become scared. He will stay out of his hole because spring is near.


The groundhog emerges on February two (two fingers)
To see if the sky is sunny and blue. (point to the sky)
 It seems rather funny (look puzzled)
That if it is sunny, (form circle in the air)
The groundhog goes back in his hole (make hold with fingers on one hand, fingers of other hand jump in hole)
Six more weeks of winter is the toll! (six fingers)


Discuss with students that when the sun shines on an object, the shadow appears on the opposite side. Experiment with shadows in your classroom by directing a light toward the wall.
Use vocabulary words to make shadows:

1. bold
2. blurry
3. large
4. small
5. pale
6. round
7. shake
8. touch
9. bounce
10. disappear

Students can use paper cut-outs or their hands to act out the groundhog coming out of his hole and seeing his shadow.

What causes a shadow?

Shadow Verse:

If I walk, my shadow walks.
If I run, my shadow runs.
And when I stand still, as you can see
My shadow stands beside me.
When I hop, my shadow hops.
When I jump, my shadow jumps.
And when I sit still, as you can see,
My shadow sits beside me. (Author Unknown)


After view the video: 

1. Brainstorm a list of video vocabulary words.

2. Create a list of things the groundhog observed.

3. Further research one of the things, i.e. the caterpillar.

 4. Write a descriptive summary of the video.

5. Discuss the setting, plot, who, what, when, where, etc. of the video.
