10 Circulatory System Activities and Projects for Kids

Teaching the circulatory system can be a lot of fun, especially when students start making connections between what they're learning and what's happening inside their own bodies. Most students know their hearts beat, but understanding how the heart, blood vessels, and lungs work together takes a little more explanation and practice.

These 10 circulatory system activities are easy to use with your 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade science students. You'll find simple games, movement activities, drawing ideas, and writing prompts that help students learn circulatory system vocabulary and understand how blood travels through the body.

Most of these activities require very little preparation, and you can use them for science centers, small groups, whole-class lessons, or a quick review before a test.

10 circulatory system activities and projects for upper elementary science

10 No-Prep Circulatory System Activities for Kids

Before starting these circulatory system activities, I would spend a little time reviewing the basic parts of the circulatory system. Students should understand that the heart pumps blood, arteries carry blood away from the heart, and veins carry blood back toward the heart.

It also helps to explain how the circulatory and respiratory systems work together. Blood picks up oxygen in the lungs and delivers it to cells throughout the body. Then it carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be breathed out.

If you need a visual reference for your lessons, you can download my FREE Circulatory System Charts. You can display them during instruction, use them for vocabulary review, or keep them available while students complete the activities below.

1. Heartbeat Hunt

This is one of the easiest circulatory system activities to try because students can actually feel their hearts working. It's a good way to introduce heart rate and talk about why the body needs more oxygen during physical activity.

How to do it:

  • Have students sit quietly for a minute or two.
  • Show them how to find their pulse on the inside of their wrist using two fingers.
  • Set a timer for 30 seconds and have students count their heartbeats.
  • Multiply the number by two to estimate their resting heart rate in beats per minute.
  • Have students do 30 seconds of comfortable movement, such as marching in place or jumping jacks.
  • Ask them to find their pulse again and count for another 30 seconds.
  • Students compare their resting and activity heart rates.

Afterward, ask students what they noticed. Did their heart rate increase? Why might the heart need to pump faster when they're moving?

Teaching tip: Students who cannot or should not participate in physical activity can compare their resting pulse with a partner's results or use sample heart-rate data. Avoid making this a competition to see who has the highest heart rate.

2. Circulatory System Charades

If your students need to review circulatory system vocabulary, try a quick game of charades. This works well after you've introduced the heart, arteries, veins, red blood cells, and lungs.

How to play:

  • Write circulatory system vocabulary words on small pieces of paper.
  • Place the words in a container.
  • Have one student choose a word without showing the class.
  • The student acts out the word or its function without speaking.
  • Classmates try to guess the vocabulary word.
  • Once the word is identified, ask someone to explain what that part does.

For example, a student representing the heart might pretend to pump blood. Someone representing a red blood cell could pretend to carry oxygen to different parts of the body.

I would let students work in small groups if they are uncomfortable acting in front of the entire class. You can also allow them to give one verbal clue if a word is especially difficult.

Another idea: If you have more time, demonstrate how blood moves through a simple model of the circulatory system. The video below may give you some ideas for a classroom demonstration.

3. Blood Cell Delivery Game

This circulatory system game helps students understand that blood carries oxygen from the lungs to cells throughout the body. It's a good movement activity for students who need to see how the different parts of the circulatory system work together.

How to play:

  • Choose areas of the classroom to represent the lungs, heart, and body cells.
  • Make small paper cards labeled O2 to represent oxygen.
  • Assign students roles as red blood cells, lungs, and body cells.
  • Students playing red blood cells begin at the heart and travel to the lungs to collect an oxygen card.
  • They return through the heart and travel to the body cells to deliver the oxygen.
  • After delivering oxygen, they return through the heart to the lungs to repeat the process.

Pause the activity occasionally and ask students to explain where the blood is going and why.

You can also add cards labeled CO2 to represent carbon dioxide being carried from body cells back to the lungs.

Teaching tip: This is a simplified model of circulation. Make sure students understand that blood follows a continuous pathway through blood vessels and the heart, rather than moving randomly through the body.

For another visual, you can use the interactive circulatory system diagrams from Innerbody. Students can explore the different parts of the cardiovascular system and see how they fit together.

4. Circulatory System Quick Draw Challenge

Sometimes a quick drawing tells you more about what students understand than a worksheet full of vocabulary questions. This activity gives students a chance to show what they know about the circulatory system.

How to play:

  • Give each student a piece of paper or a small whiteboard.
  • Call out a circulatory system vocabulary word, such as heart, artery, vein, or red blood cell.
  • Give students about one minute to draw the word or show its function.
  • Ask a few students to share their drawings.
  • Compare their drawings with a classroom diagram and discuss any corrections.

For a more challenging version, ask students to draw the path blood takes from the heart to the lungs and back, or from the heart to the body and back.

You could also have students work with partners to create a simple heart model using clay, paper, or other classroom supplies.

Teaching tip: Remind students that these are science drawings, not an art contest. You're looking for accurate labels and an understanding of how the parts work together.

5. Circulatory System Partner Quiz Show

This is a simple review game that you can use before a circulatory system quiz or test. Students work with partners and take turns asking and answering science questions.

How to play:

  • Have students write five questions about the circulatory system.
  • Ask them to include the correct answers on a separate piece of paper.
  • Pair students and have them take turns asking their questions.
  • Students earn one point for each correct answer.
  • After both students finish, they review any questions they missed.

Here are a few questions students could use:

  • What is the main job of the heart? (To pump blood.)
  • Which blood vessels carry blood away from the heart? (Arteries.)
  • Which blood vessels carry blood toward the heart? (Veins.)
  • Where does blood pick up oxygen? (In the lungs.)
  • What do red blood cells help transport? (Oxygen.)

If your students aren't ready to write their own questions, you can provide a list for them to use.

Teaching tip: Have students explain incorrect answers rather than simply telling their partners the correct response. This gives them another opportunity to review the vocabulary.

6. If I Were a Red Blood Cell Writing Prompt

This is a fun way to combine science and writing. Students imagine they're red blood cells traveling through the circulatory system and describe their journey through the body.

Give students this writing prompt:

Imagine you are a red blood cell. Describe your journey as you travel through the heart, lungs, and body. Where do you go? What do you carry? What happens along the way?

Before students begin writing, review the path of blood flow using a diagram. You can also give them a short list of vocabulary words to include in their paragraphs.

For example:

  • Heart
  • Lungs
  • Oxygen
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Arteries
  • Veins

Students can write a paragraph, create a short story, or make a comic strip showing the red blood cell's journey.

For background reading, the National Library of Medicine has a free explanation and diagram of the circulatory system that you can use as a reference.

7. Clap the Heartbeat

This is a quick circulatory system activity that works well when you only have five minutes left in your science lesson.

How to do it:

  • Explain that heart rate is measured in beats per minute.
  • Choose a sample resting heart rate, such as 70 beats per minute.
  • Use a metronome or steady clapping to demonstrate approximately 70 beats per minute.
  • Ask students to clap along with the rhythm.
  • Increase the tempo to represent a faster heart rate during exercise.
  • Have students compare the two rhythms and describe what changed.

Ask students why their hearts may beat faster when they're exercising. Discuss how working muscles need more oxygen and nutrients.

Teaching tip: You can connect this activity to the Heartbeat Hunt from Activity 1. Students can compare the rhythm with the pulse rates they measured earlier.

8. What's My Job? Circulatory System Match-Up

This is an easy vocabulary review activity that requires only paper or sticky notes. It works well after students have learned the basic parts and functions of the circulatory system.

How to play:

  • Write circulatory system vocabulary words on the board, such as heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, and red blood cells.
  • Write the functions of those parts on separate sticky notes.
  • Give each student or pair of students a sticky note.
  • Students read their descriptions and decide which vocabulary word matches.
  • Have students place their sticky notes beside the correct words.
  • Review the matches as a class.

For example, a sticky note that says "Carries blood away from the heart" would match arteries. Another that says "Tiny blood vessels where substances are exchanged with body tissues" would match capillaries.

For students who need additional support, you can provide a circulatory system vocabulary chart to use while they complete the activity.

9. Circulatory System Video and Discussion

A short science video can be helpful when students are learning how the heart and blood vessels work together. I would keep the video short and stop occasionally to check for understanding.

How to use it:

  • Tell students what you want them to watch for before starting the video.
  • Play a short section about the heart or blood circulation.
  • Pause and ask students to explain what they learned.
  • Have them draw or write one important fact in their science notebooks.
  • Continue the video and discuss any new vocabulary.

Some questions you might ask include:

  • What happens to blood when it travels through the lungs?
  • Why does the body need blood to keep moving?
  • What is the difference between arteries and veins?
  • What might happen if the heart stopped pumping blood?

Here's a circulatory system video you can use as part of your lesson.

10. Stop and Sketch Circulatory System Vocabulary

This is one of my favorite types of vocabulary activities because students have to think about what a word means instead of just copying its definition.

How to do it:

  • Introduce a circulatory system vocabulary word.
  • Explain its meaning and show students a diagram or example.
  • Give students one or two minutes to sketch the word in their science notebooks.
  • Have them label their drawings and write a short definition.
  • Ask students to share their sketches with a partner.

For example, when learning about arteries and veins, students might draw arrows showing the direction blood travels in relation to the heart.

You can also use this activity with vocabulary such as atrium, ventricle, pulse, oxygen, and capillaries.

Teaching tip: Have students return to their sketches at the end of the circulatory system unit. They can add new labels or correct anything they misunderstood during the first lesson.

Circulatory System Interactive Notebook Activity

If your students enjoy cutting, folding, and putting together science projects, you may also want to use my Circulatory System Interactive Notebook Activity.

It's another way for students to practice circulatory system vocabulary and review what they've learned about the human body. You can use it during your science unit, for independent work, or as a review activity.

More Human Body Systems Activities and Worksheets

If you're teaching the circulatory system as part of a larger human body systems unit, you may also be interested in my Human Body Systems Bundle.

This bundle includes a variety of printable science activities for reviewing human body systems. You'll find interactive notebook activities, worksheets, vocabulary practice, and other resources that can be used with upper elementary and special education students.

Depending on the lesson, you can use these resources for science centers, independent work, small group instruction, or review before a test.

Some of the activities include:

  • Sequencing and cut-and-paste activities
  • Human body systems vocabulary practice
  • Printable task cards
  • Science writing prompts
  • Worksheets and review activities

Take a look at the Human Body Systems Bundle here.

Making Circulatory System Activities Part of Your Science Lessons

You don't need to use all 10 circulatory system activities in one week. I would choose a few that fit the skills you're teaching and save the others for review.

For example, you might begin your circulatory system unit with the Heartbeat Hunt to get students thinking about how their hearts work. Later in the week, you could use the Blood Cell Delivery Game to help them understand circulation. Once students have learned the vocabulary, try the Partner Quiz Show or What's My Job? Match-Up for review.

Some students will understand the circulatory system best when they see a diagram, while others may need to act it out, draw it, or explain it to a partner. Giving students a few different ways to practice can make a big difference.

I hope these circulatory system activities give you some easy ideas to use with your students!

I'd love to hear how it goes in your classroom! Feel free to reach out with questions, comments, or resource requests.

Thanks for all you do for kids!

❤️ Shelly
